Guide
Deep links send readers straight to the product, plan or category you recommend instead of a homepage. Here's how they work, when programs restrict them, and how to set them up without breaking tracking.

A deep link in affiliate marketing is a tracking link that sends the reader to a specific page — a product, a category, a pricing plan — instead of the merchant's homepage. It sounds like a small detail, but it is where a lot of affiliate revenue is quietly won or lost: every extra click between your recommendation and the checkout is a chance for the reader to wander off.
This explainer is for publishers, bloggers and creators who use network links today and want to understand how deep linking works under the hood, when it is allowed, and how to set it up without breaking tracking.

When you join a program, the network usually gives you a default tracking link. Click it and you land on the brand's homepage with your affiliate ID attached. A deep link carries the same tracking but points at a page you choose.
Two related terms get mixed up:
If you are new to the tracking side, start with how affiliate tracking works — deep linking sits on top of the same click-and-cookie mechanism.
A deep link is usually just the network's tracking URL with an extra parameter holding your destination, URL-encoded so it survives the redirect. A simplified example:
https://track.network.example/click?pub=12345&prog=678&url=https%3A%2F%2Fbrand.example%2Fshoes%2Frunner-x
When the reader clicks, four things happen in a fraction of a second:

Because the tracking hop is the same, commission rules don't change. The cookie window, attribution model and rate are identical whether the reader lands on the homepage or a product page. What changes is the reader's path.
A homepage forces the reader to search for the thing you just recommended. Some will, many won't, and a few will find a different product with a different commission rate — or leave for a marketplace.
| Homepage link | Deep link | |
|---|---|---|
| Landing page | Brand homepage | The exact product, category or plan |
| Clicks to cart | Several (search, filter, select) | Usually one or two |
| Match to reader intent | Weak | Strong |
| Commission terms | Program default | Same program default |
| Maintenance | Rarely breaks | Breaks if the page moves or is removed |
| Best for | Brand overviews, "visit the store" buttons | Reviews, comparisons, gift guides, tutorials |
The trade-off is maintenance. A homepage link never 404s; a product link can die when stock or URLs change. That is a manageable cost, not a reason to avoid deep links.
Most networks give you at least one of these:
Whichever method you use, add sub IDs so you can tell which article, placement or platform drove the sale. Our sub ID guide covers a naming scheme that works across networks.
The major networks below all support custom-destination links, and the automated tools handle deep linking for you across many merchants. Check each program's terms, since individual brands can still restrict it.

The mechanism is the same everywhere, but each channel has its own quirks:
| Channel | Where the deep link goes | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Blog posts and reviews | Inline text links, buttons, comparison tables | Keep product links fresh on evergreen pages |
| YouTube and podcasts | Description or show notes | Use a short, readable redirect on your own domain that forwards the full tracking link |
| Instagram and TikTok | Link-in-bio pages, stories, shop tools | Some platforms wrap links in their own redirect, so test the full path on mobile |
| Email newsletters | Product blocks and CTAs | Email click tracking adds another hop; confirm parameters survive it |
| Mobile app traffic | App deep links, where the program supports them | Without app support, the link may open the mobile site instead of the app |
For creators on social platforms, a clean link-in-bio page with one deep link per featured product usually beats a single homepage link for every post.
Usually, but not always. A program can:
Read the program terms or ask your affiliate manager before building a big content cluster around deep links into one merchant.
? or & in the destination can be read as part of the tracking URL, breaking the redirect or dropping your ID.If you see clicks but no sales on a deep-linked post, our guide to why affiliate clicks don't convert walks through the usual tracking failures.
Deep linking doesn't change what a program pays per sale; it changes how many sales you actually get. Link to the page the reader wants, encode the destination properly, tag it with sub IDs and test the click path. Homepage links have their place, but for reviews, comparisons and tutorials, the deep link should be your default.
It is an affiliate tracking link that sends the reader to a specific page, such as a product, category or pricing plan, rather than the merchant's homepage, while still crediting the sale to you.
No. The tracking hop, cookie window and commission terms are the same as the program's default link. Deep linking changes where the reader lands, which usually improves the chance they buy.
Use your network's deep link generator, apply the documented destination parameter with a URL-encoded target, use a browser extension, or let an automated linking tool convert ordinary links for you.
Characters like ? and & in the destination can be read as part of the tracking URL. Encoding them keeps the destination intact so the redirect works and your publisher ID isn't dropped.
Yes. Some programs disable deep linking, restrict certain destinations such as sale or gift card pages, or exclude products from commission. Check the program terms before building content around it.
An affiliate deep link points a web tracking link at a specific page. An app deep link opens a specific screen inside an installed mobile app, which only works when the program supports app tracking.
Click it in a private browser window, confirm you land on the intended page, and check that the click shows in your network dashboard with the right sub IDs.
They can when a product is discontinued or a page URL changes. Audit evergreen posts regularly and update links to moved or removed pages.
